Dog Days of Summer

It finally feels like we’re about to leave summer behind.  Kids are back in school, days getting shorter, so that means the Dog Days of Summer are officially behind us.  I’ve heard and used this phrase, but realized I didn’t know much about the origin of the saying.  One online site, usafact.org, says the days ran from July 24th through August 24th. It was thought that this was an evil time when the sea would boil, wine would turn sour and dogs would go mad. Disease would also be on the rise.  Well, this sounds a little to familiar!

So, on to a better topic . . . quilts! Linda brought in a quilt she made for her son and I fell in love with the panel and accompanying fabrics.  I doubt she was on the highway and I had found it online and ordered three Wigglebutts by Clothworks!  Below is a photo of Linda’s finished quilt, along with her inspiration for the quilt, Badger.

In my case, I used other fabrics along with fabrics from the collection.  The lucky recipients were Jayne, a good friend moving back to Michigan and a Brenda and Leigh-Anne, a couple of my family members.  Honestly, there are so many dog lovers in our family, I could have made more, but it was tough finding panels and accompanying fabric, hence why I used something else for borders.

Usually, I show a photo of the finished quilt, but it was so much fun getting a text with the quilt being used that I’m sharing that instead. They moved in August 2020 and her husband, Darren, decided to cozy up in the quilt while working from home.  Jayne snapped a pic and it made my day having this pop up.  See below.

It made me miss Oliver, THE BEST YELLOW LAB, so we managed a distance dinner in October 2020 in South Haven, Michigan and I got my Oliver fix. Oh, Jayne and Darren, too.

For my sister, Brenda, she rescues Rhodesian Ridgebacks and I knew the “Every Meal You Make, Every Bite You Take, I’ll Be Watching You” would be appreciated.  She lives outside Austin, Texas, so maybe not quilt country, but as you can see in the photo below, still works.

The third quilt went to one of my nieces who rescues pitties and knew the “Dog Hair Don’t Care” part of the quilt was fitting, so off to Chicago that quilt went.  In the photo below, a close up of that part of the panel.

The paw prints in the background of panel add a nice touch.

The dog bones quilted on it was intentional, not just because it’s a perfect quilt pattern, but because it gives good coverage and will hold up well over the years.  Our quilts are made to be loved and used so when we got the photo below of Hannibal napping, we were happy. Levi (rear, black and white guy sporting a red shirt) and Ada (front, gray fur and coordinating gray top) are pictured below.

While I didn’t make one for us, I had to sneak our dogs in this journal entry, too.  Beatrice is the “cover girl” and Lulu is pictured below, in her natural habitat, all nested in one of our quilts.  I had pulled sheets and quilt for laundry, but had not put in the wash yet.  I guess this is what happens when you move slow – LOL.

Nothing to see here . . . move along . . .

Hoping the Dog Days of Summer are behind us all and we’re headed for a healthy rest of 2021!  Woof!
