Adirondack Beauty

Our neighbor sent a friend and colleague our way in August.  They did their OBGYN residency together and are both now both working in St. Louis.  Caitlin is from New York originally and had some quilt tops that her Mom had started or pieced before she passed away.  We were happy to finish them for her and in the eight months that followed that first appointment, Caitlin has become a quilter!

Caitlin loved blue and white blocks that her mom had made. She pieced two coordinating quilts – one for her new baby girl and another for her sister’s new daughter. See photo below.

Voila! The quilt is finished!

The two girls are just three months apart! Now each baby has something special from their Nanny, who they never got to meet. Receiving the photos below made our day!

Here the quilts are beautifully modeled by their sweet owners.

Caitlin’s mother’s friend, Gail, made a darling quilt for the baby and sent it to us to finish.  We had a quick phone call, showed some suggestions, and Gail decided on this lovely quilt pattern in a light thread.

This quilt pattern is called “damask” and a soft contrast to the pretty half square blocks.

Over Super Bowl Sunday Caitlin and our neighbor, Elise, got busy making a quilt for another friend who had a baby on the way.  The best part about this is when they brought it in to be quilted, Elise said it was her first time to sew and Caitlin quickly added “on something that wasn’t human”.  We’ve heard a lot of comments from and about first time sew-ers, but never that! They chose a fun outdoor theme to compliment the themed pattern in the quilt. Below is a close up of the first row while it was on the longarm.

Caitlin’s mom had made some flying geese and Caitlin wanted to finish it. She took creative license to add some borders to it and it turned out beautiful. We decided on some custom quilting to show off the “geese” in a dark thread. Now a novice quilter, Caitlin will attempt the binding and we can’t wait to see it.

The borders were a great add to break up the gaggle of geese!

When Caitlin’s dad came to visit, he brought along this beautiful paper pieced quilt top that was pieced in the Adirondack at a “quilt camp”. The quilt camp is held in Long Lake, NY each July. Caitlin knew that her dad would love to visit TGQ and they came in the first day he arrived. They thought that following the lines of the piecing would make for nice quilting.  It did see below.

However, while this was on the long arm, we thought a little “tree bark” might be fun.  It’s her dad’s favorite part! This black teardrop fabric was used for the back and binding as well as tabs so this piece can be hung on the wall.  We painted the dowel black so it would blend nicely and it’s all ready to go home to the Adirondacks in New York for Caitlin’s dad to enjoy.

We’re excited to help Caitlin finish more pieces of her mom’s collection and new quilts of her own and we really appreciate she trusts us with such special quilt tops!
